Awards and Honors
Dr. Kirk Washington was recently awarded Healthcare Provider of the Year by the St. Louis American Foundation. He was awarded on May 3, 2008, at the Hilton Hotel by the Ballpark downtown, for his excellence in healthcare services. Dr. Washington has been taking care of families’ dental health needs for more than 14 years. He ran a private dental practice for 11 years in New Orleans, before coming to Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Centers (PHC) in 2005, after the devastating Hurricane Katrina. The love of dentistry and serving the community is evident in Dr. Washington, by the demeanor he portrays to his patients. “Dr. Washington is a very nice, caring, and compassionate person, who always put the patient’s needs first,” said Karen Richardson, Dental Director at PHC. Although his horrific experience of Katrina transitioned him to St. Louis, PHC regrets his lost, but is very pleased to have Dr. Washington as part of the PHC team!

She was featured in the August edition of the St. Louis Magazine. At least 45,000 doctors are contacted each year, who were identified in previous research as the “best” in their specialties and asked the question: “If you or your loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?” Dr. Michael O’Connor, Medical Director, said, “I am very proud of both Dr. Harvey’s for the outstanding achievement. They are both highly dedicated to their patients and the communities they serve and a tremendous asset to PHC.” Dr. Jacqueline Harvey has been providing PHC with this wonderful health care for over 25 years and she has seen generations of patients. Dr. Robert Moore
, Podiatrist at PHC, was selected as an Outstanding Healthcare Provider by the St. Louis American Foundation for 2010. Dr. Moore was nominated by his peer, Dr. Tracey Reed, as well as others, and was selected by the St. Louis American Foundation board members. The foundation selects and honors at least 3 different categories each year, Medical, Education, and Communications. Proceeds go toward providing scholarships to deserving graduates.
Dr. Moore has been with PHC for nearly 20 years. He has built a compassionate relationship with his patients and many have been returning to Dr. Moore for years. LaVerne Steptoe-Herndon said, “I was very impressed with Dr. Moore and the whole staff. He diagnosed my foot problem correctly, whereas, the previous doctors I had seen only guessed at the problem. I couldn’t stop talking about Dr. Moore to my husband and family.” Other patients boast about how Dr. Moore is so personable, patient, compassionate, and ask a lot of good questions about their foot problems.
Moore has made several guest appearances on People’s Heath Magazine TV Show to share necessary information about the feet. Many viewers have expressed their appreciation for his input and knowledge about feet. PHC is honored to have Dr. Robert Moore on their team. Congratulations Dr. Moore!
Mrs. Clara Scott , Social Worker and the longest employed member of Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Centers (PHC), was awarded a 2011 Excellence in Health Care Award. She was nominated by her peers and selected by the St. Louis American Foundation board members. Scott was one of 8 awardees in this category. Scott has been an outstanding employee to PHC for over 28 years. She began as a volunteer about a year before she accepted a staff position at PHC in 1983. She has many memories of the way things were done and the extreme changes that have occurred over the years; from a handful of patients and one center to hundreds of patients and three health centers. Scott was encouraged by Betty Jean Kerr to return to school to heighten her career, after working in various positions at PHC. She went back to school and became a Social Worker. Scott has always believed highly in the efforts and services of PHC. She was always thinking of ways to make PHC even better; for patients and staff. She later implemented the appointment procedures, which doubled the patients in the clinic during that time. She continuously motivates other staff to understand the greatness of PHC. She participates in health fairs throughout the year, plans employee boosting occasions for staff, and coordinates a food drive and Christmas gifts for the patients every year. “It is a Blessing to be the longest employee at People’s Health Centers,” said Scott. “I have seen many people come and go; some have even returned. It’s a privilege to share the history of the health center. I encourage the staff to invest in our health center. By providing quality health care in the community, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of people in need.” Scott truly deserves to be saluted for her excellence in health care. Congratulations Clara Scott.
