People’s/Hopewell Drives ‘Healthy Living’ into the Community
People’s/Hopewell North St. Louis Healthy Living Outreach Series
BJK People’s Health Centers and ALM Hopewell Center is bringing healthcare to residents of North St. Louis
Kickoff: Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 9:00 am until 1:00 pm
Why: Due to the need and lack of medical access to residents of North St. Louis, the community is taking a stand to tackle its own problem by setting up a health mobile van and bringing healthy living to the residents of North St. Louis at no cost to the community. Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Centers and Amanda Luckett Murphy Hopewell Center are providing a Healthy Living Summer “Health Fair” Series to help the residents of North St. Louis be screened for health and wellness.
What: According to the North St. Louis Health Care Access Study, life expectancy for a male living in North St. Louis is approximately 10 years lower than the average life expectancy for St. Louis City. In response to growing concerns, the North St. Louis Health Care Access Study Task Force was formed amidst tremendous support from the St. Louis African American Aldermanic Caucus. The immense need and mounting demand for sufficient health care in this grossly underserved area is well documented.
BJK People’s Health Centers and ALM Hopewell Center have collaborated to help address this problem head-on. As a commitment, the organizations will provide medical, dental and behavioral health screenings to North St. Louis every Saturday throughout this summer.
The kick-off will consist of a health mobile van set up to provide initial dental exams, blood pressure, glucose, depression and anxiety screenings, as well as panel discussion, cooking demonstration, free haircuts, snacks and prizes. The health fairs and weekly mobile screenings that are being offered throughout the summer are a precursor to more permanent health services that we ultimately plan to unveil in the community.
When: Saturday, June 26, 2010 – 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Who: Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Centers and Amanda Luckett Murphy Hopewell Center have joined forces to create Healthy Living Series for North St. Louis. Various political dignitaries, such as Congressman William L. Clay Jr. and others will participate in support of this initiative.
Where: New Northside Community Center 5939 Goodfellow St. Louis, MO 63122 . Contact: Questions and interview requests before and during the event should be directed to Betty Randall at (314) 367-7848 ext. 1221 or Mark Sanford (314) 367-7848 ext. 1209 or brandall@phcenters.com or msanford@phcenters.com.
